Though rare and far between, Lamphs are found throughout the world. We are known to live in Great Britain,
Scotland, Ireland, the Isle of Wight, the United States of America and Australia.
But no matter where we live today, we all seem to be able to trace our origins to Markethill (Cnoc an
Mhargaidh), County Armagh, North Ireland.

The origin of the Lamph name
The origin of Lamph as a surname is unknown, though the word "lamph" is incorporated in some place names in Ireland. Drumlamph,
a townland located in County Londonderry, means "Ridge of the marsh-mallows/elm trees", and Drumclamph (Ridge
of the lepers) is near Ardstraw in County Tyrone.
Some members of the Lamph family believe the name is a corruption of a French name and was brought to Ireland by French
Huguenot settlers. Some claim that it is of Spanish, Italian, or German origin. Others believe it is Welsh.
Regardless of what different branches of the family believe, none of these traditions have been substantiated. The origin
of the name remains a mystery.
